Last month, our students had the opportunity to take part in an introductory origami workshop, giving them the chance to experience a traditional Japanese art form while practicing Japanese in a new setting. The workshop also brought students from different classes together, creating a relaxed environment where they could connect, learn, and enjoy something new together. Even some of our teachers joined in on the fun!

Leading the workshop was Akiko Sensei, a special guest teacher and Tokyo native with more than 30 years of experience teaching Japanese arts and crafts both in Japan and abroad.

Akiko Sensei also runs her own YouTube channel, where she shares colorful origami tutorials. In addition to her online activities, she regularly hosts workshops and classes throughout Tokyo, giving people the opportunity to experience traditional Japanese arts firsthand.

As Meko’s first origami workshop, students began by learning three foundational designs while receiving instructions from Akiko sensei in Japanese. By the end of the workshop, students had created their own origami pieces and, perhaps more importantly, had shared a new experience with classmates from different levels. After seeing how carefully and creatively everyone approached their work, we think they might be ready for a bigger challenge next time!
